August Birthstone: Peridot

Did you know that the birthstone of August was called by Ancient Romans ‘Evening Emerald’, due to its sparkle even during the evening and night?

The stone is peridot, distinctive for its extremely bright and vivid shades of green, with hints of neon or yellow. Forgotten for decades in favour of more precious stones, peridot is nowadays relevant again due to growing trend for coloured stones, in which its vibrant lemon-green hue has found its place.

Discovered in Egypt, the name is derived from the Arabic faridat, meaning “gem,” or from the Greek word, peridona, which means “give in abundance.”

Given its resemblance to the color of money, peridot has often been associated with prosperity and good fortune.

Ancient Egyptians called the peridot the “gem of the Sun,” as they believed it protected those who wore it from the terrors of the night
